Your first session is an opportunity for you and your therapist to get to know one another and begin understanding your needs. You’ll be invited to talk about what brought you to therapy, your goals, and any concerns or questions you may have. Your therapist will ask some background questions to help guide the assessment and begin developing a plan tailored to you.
If you’re attending online, you’ll receive a link before your appointment and can join from any private, comfortable space.
Appointments are generally 50 - 90 minutes, depending on what is most appropriate for you. You and your therapist will determine what is the best course of treatment.
The Taproot Psychology team has expertise in a number of therapeutic models including:

At Taproot psychology we schedule treatments especially for you. We ask that you respect that there are many other clients waiting for appointment times and giving us appropriate notice allows us to fill your spot.
We require at least 48-hour notice in order to cancel or change any services, so that we can reallocate that time to another client.
Any CANCELLATIONS or NO SHOWS made within the 48-hour window are subject to FULL SESSION FEE. If an appointment is cancelled, late or missed, the appropriate fees will need to be paid in full before any future treatments can continue.
In the event of an illness or emergency we ask you to contact us directly. Exceptions to the cancellation policy are based upon individual basis.
You will be sent an email/text reminder prior to your appointment, however please note that this is your responsibility to allow for sufficient cancellation times.
Online therapy is essentially the same as an in-office appointment but from the comfort of your own space. We use a number of online platforms including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Remote EMDR and Bilateral Base.
Your clinician will email you a link to attend your appointment.
Absolutely. We understand that one of the most important components of therapy is the therapeutic relationship between you and your therapist. If you feel like your therapist is not a fit for what you are looking for then please speak with your therapist or our administrator and we will get you set up with a new therapist and appointment.
The length of counselling depends on your goals and the issues you’re addressing. Some people see results in just a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term counselling. Typically, individual sessions last about 50 minutes, and counselling can be short-term (a few weeks) or longer-term (several months or more).
Therapy is completely confidential, meaning that what you share and your personal information cannot be shared with others without your consent. However, there are times when confidentiality must be broken in the interest of protecting yourself, others and for legal reasons. These reasons tend to be rare and include the following:
1. Imminent threat emergencies, which include threats of suicide and homicide.
2. Mandated reporting situations regarding abuse/neglect of a minor or individual.
3. Court mandates or subpoenas.
