If you are reading this, you may already be carrying more than most people can see.
Many people who come to trauma-informed therapy tell us they feel invisible — unseen, unheard, or misunderstood. You may have learned to cope, to push through, or to get on with daily life, while something inside continues to struggle. If that resonates, you are not alone — and there is nothing wrong with you.
At Taproot Psychology, we are a group practice of therapists with extensive experience supporting trauma survivors. Our work is grounded in compassion, safety, and collaboration. Trauma-informed therapy is not about fixing you. It is about creating a space where your experiences make sense, your symptoms are understood, and your story is held with care.
We offer online trauma therapy across the UK, as well as trauma therapy in Manchester, supporting clients wherever they are.
What Trauma-Informed Therapy Looks Like
Trauma-informed therapy begins with understanding how trauma affects your nervous system, emotions, body, and sense of self. Often, the first priority is helping you feel safer and more regulated so that everyday life feels more manageable.
This may include:
- sharing grounding techniques to help you feel present and safe in the moment
- exploring ways to steady overwhelming emotions or physical responses
- learning why your symptoms occur, so they feel less frightening and less isolating
Understanding what is happening inside you can be deeply relieving. Many clients tell us that when their symptoms are recognised as trauma responses, fear begins to ease and self-blame softens.
One client with PTSD had been in frequent contact with their GP, searching for answers. In their very first session, after receiving trauma-focused psychoeducation, they shared that for the first time since the trauma happened, they didn’t feel like they were “going crazy.” Feeling truly heard mattered.
Moving at Your Pace
As therapy progresses — and only when you feel ready and supported — we may begin to gently explore your experiences in more depth. This can include processing what you have been through and grieving the losses trauma can bring, such as lost safety, trust, relationships, or parts of yourself.
There is no rush. You will never be pushed to talk about anything before you feel ready. At Taproot Psychology, we do not believe it is helpful or safe to revisit traumatic experiences without enough internal and external support in place. You set the pace.
You Are in Control of the Therapy
Many people worry that therapy will be directive, or that they will be expected to relive painful experiences. Trauma-informed therapy is different.
You guide the sessions. We work with what you bring, when you bring it. We regularly check in to ensure you feel safe and that the work feels helpful. Your feedback matters — if something isn’t working, we adapt.
Our role is to offer clinical knowledge, experience, and compassion. Your role is simply to show up as you are.
The Types of Trauma We Support
People seek therapy for many different reasons. Trauma can stem from a single event or from repeated experiences over time. Our therapists work with a wide range of trauma, including:
- physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse
- childhood trauma
- coercive control
- relationship loss and grief
- car accidents, plane accidents, and other traumatic incidents
Whatever has brought you here, your experience is valid.
What Healing Can Feel Like
Trauma-informed therapy is not always easy. At times it can feel challenging, and it often requires courage. Yet many clients notice meaningful changes as the work unfolds.
Clients often describe feeling more connected to others, lighter, and more motivated. Anxiety may reduce, mood may improve, and confidence can begin to grow — sometimes noticed by others before it is felt internally. Many people develop a stronger sense of self-worth and a growing ability to set healthy boundaries.
Healing does not mean forgetting what happened. It means being able to live your life with more choice, presence, and connection — to yourself and to others.
Healing Happens Together
Trauma-informed therapy is not something you have to do alone. With the right support and a collaborative therapeutic relationship, healing from trauma is possible.
