We're so glad you found us.

If you've gone through trauma, there are a few things you may be experiencing:

  • Shame or self-blame
  • Not knowing or understanding if your experience is real or not
  • A lack of trust in yourself
  • Feeling scared of the world
  • Feeling fearful all the time
  • Constantly looking over your shoulder
  • Not knowing why you feel the way you do

These experiences are normal responses for someone who's gone through a traumatic experience.

It's even common for trauma survivors to completely dissociate from their bodies. Your body tries to protect you by turning your brain off to the traumatic event that occurred. This creates a disconnect between your body and mind.

On the other hand, sometimes you become hypervigilant in the wake of a traumatic event. This is when your body goes into fight, flight, freeze, or friend mode. No matter what you're feeling or how you're currently responding to trauma, we're here to help you navigate through it.

Seeking out trauma therapy is a monumental step towards healing, and we'd be honoured to work with you.

Why Choose Us for Trauma Recovery?

The taproot is this central root from which all other roots grow. It's the key element for the growth and development of all plant life.

We use the taproot as a metaphor for growth and healing. In order for people to have happy, fulfilling lives, they need to have strong roots to ground them in their values and sense of self... but trauma disrupts this process. At Taproot Psychology, we help you find your roots and grow into the beautiful tree that you are.

Our mission is to help people find joy and pleasure in their lives after a traumatic experience.

Taproot Psychology is honoured to hold space for you as you embark on your journey to recover from trauma. If you're here, you may be experiencing:

Loneliness
Disconnection from others
Feeling stuck in the past
Constantly thinking and reliving things that have happened
A loss of control
A feeling of existing but not living
Not feeling fully present in the moment

These experiences are all related to trauma. If any of these describe your current life, we will be there to walk with you on your journey to healing. It may seem daunting at first, but there is hope. Trauma therapy can bring healing and growth into your life that you never thought possible.

How We Approach Trauma Therapy

At Taproot Psychology, our practice is informed by a number of therapeutic modalities. Trauma therapy isn't a one-size-fits-all experience. We offer a combination of EMDR, Cognitive Analytical Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

EMDR stands for Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing. During an EMDR session, we direct your eye movements while you relive a traumatic event. The distraction of the directed eye movement allows you to experience the trauma less intensely and with greater control over your emotions.

Compassion Focused Therapy helps you rebuild a relationship with yourself. It reconnects you to your positive attributes and teaches you self-nourishment. We want to help you find your taproot and flourish. The goal of this type of trauma therapy is to stand tall and learn how to compassionately be there for yourself.

Cognitive Analytical Therapy is used when you're stuck in certain patterns and want to find a way out. We'll have you draw a map of your life and identify the patterns that need to be changed. This will guide you from a place of distress to a place of healing from the trauma.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy provides you with tools to manage difficult thoughts and emotions. CBT is useful for people who are managing depression and anxiety but can also help those healing from trauma. It focuses on how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours impact one another. The goal is to identify and change the negative thoughts into thoughts that are based on reality.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy introduces evidence-based strategies to address a range of difficulties and to address challenges such as impulsivity, self-harm, depression, chronic shame, and guilt, as well as coping mechanisms that are not serving your life goals. DBT skills can empower you to navigate the complexities of intense emotions and enhance your capacity to manage distress in a healthy manner.

What to Expect From Taproot Psychology

We are real, down-to-earth people who are truth-tellers. At Taproot Psychology, we value honesty, even when it's difficult to hear.

Our clinicians at Taproot Psychology will challenge you. We're compassionate, empathetic, and caring, but we also know that growth doesn't happen from staying in your comfort zone.

You can expect creative approaches in therapy in addition to EMDR and traditional talk therapy. We sometimes use movement, bodywork, drawing, or letter-writing as tools in recovery. This can be a powerful way to re-write your inner narrative.

Being open to experiencing new feelings is how you find healing and growth from traumatic experiences. While going outside of your comfort zone is necessary, and feeling unpleasant emotions is part of the healing process - remember, you are not alone. It's our job to guide and comfort you through this process. When you work with us, you'll have a collaborative team that's invested in you.

We're ready to show up and help you through this. But, trauma therapy is most effective when you're ready to do the work, feel your way through the pain, and trust that there is hope waiting for you on the other side.

Recovery from trauma is a difficult journey

But we're here to be with you on your path to healing, growth, and self-discovery.
At Taproot Psychology we help you reflect on your pain without sitting in it. We'll offer support as you explore your difficult emotions.
Then we'll process those feelings together, and create an environment where you can grow.
