Individual Trauma Therapy

Individual psychology sessions at Taproot Psychology are tailored to meet your specific needs. In addition to traditional talk therapy informed by Cognitive Analytical Therapy and many other modalities, we offer EMDR trauma therapy.

EMDR is a method of processing difficult or overwhelming life events. In an EMDR session, you'll be asked to think about what the event was in great detail. You don't need to talk about it because you'll spend the session reliving the memory while your therapist uses bilateral stimulation and tapping to distract you from the traumatic memories.

You'll use grounding techniques such as movement and visualizations. Your therapist may ask you to find a calm place in your mind. Throughout your time attending therapy for trauma, it's important that you have a strong social network to support you through this healing process.

Cognitive Analytical Therapy sessions look very different from EMDR sessions. In Cognitive Analytical Therapy you'll be asked to look at your relationships and the root of what is keeping you stuck.

We'll make a map of your behavioural patterns and find a way for you to change the unhelpful patterns that you get stuck in and discover choices and ways of doing things differently, creating a new map that serves you better. We'll look at how we use patterns when treating trauma and find your triggers and notice your responses. Cognitive Analytical Therapy allows you to develop your understanding of how you learned to survive sometimes intense and unmanageable feelings by relating to others and yourself in particular ways.

Aside from Cognitive Analytical Therapy and EMDR, we use several other types of therapy in our practice at Taproot Psychology:

Compassion-Focused Therapy focuses on developing compassion and acceptance of the self.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy focuses on learning skills to manage emotional stability. It is broken up into four skill sets - interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy focuses on the "here and now" difficulties that include anxiety and depression. It works towards changing thinking patterns and explores how your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected. It's a problem-focused, action-oriented approach to therapy.

Because we do much of our work online, we can't work with individuals who are actively suicidal. If you need urgent help, please go to your nearest emergency room or crisis response centre.

We do, however, work with individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts and engaging in self-harm behaviours in the context of low mood and depression. If this is you, we urge you to reach out to us and seek the help you need. If we can't meet your specific needs, we'll be able to refer you to qualified clinicians who can.

2. Talk To Us

The telephone consultation is an opportunity for you to tell us about your situation and for us to gain a shared understanding of your difficulties and what you would like to get from therapy. We'll also talk you through the therapy process so you feel completely comfortable before your first session.

3. Your First Session

Meet us in-person or online to begin. You will be given the tools and resources to help you find your roots.
